ELDER ABUSE
There are over 31 million Americans 65 years of age or older, and this age group is one of the fastest growing segments of the population. Elder abuse is a term referring to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult. Elder abuse can include physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation of funds or property, neglect and/or abandonment. “Elder” is defined as a person 65 years of age or older. However, elder abuse laws also apply to an adult between the ages of 18 and 64 who has physical or mental limitations that restrict his or her ability to carry out normal activities or to protect his or her rights.
